2008 Rocky Mountains Trip

Sunday, September 21

The poor weather continued today, so we decided to sleep in and then go shopping in West Yellowstone. We figured it would be a lost day except for our quest for Yellowstone T-shirts. Instead, we got quite a surprise when we spotted two bald eagles along the road just south of Gibbon Falls. They were sitting side-by-side in a dead tree on the opposite side of the river. They were quite a ways off, but they were still impressive. While we were standing there shooting, one of the guys from "Good Morning America" stopped and asked us what we were shooting. We shot the eagles with every lens and doubler we had. There was some definite lens envy when two ladies stopped and pulled out the husband's camera and lens. He had a 600 mm lens. The camera looked tiny as the lens was attached to the tripod. The lens alone weighted 13 pounds.

We eventually ran out of lenses and things to try, so we drove on to West Yellowstone and had lunch. We walked all over West Yellowstone looking for T-shirts but didn't find anything that really grabbed us. We left West Yellowstone empty handed and drove back toward our campsite. On the way, we stopped at Gibbon Falls.Google Earth View The lighting was pretty subdued with the cloudy weather, but the falls is still pretty amazing.
