2009 New England Trip

Friday, October 9

Overcast gray skies. Clouds and rain. Today is six straight days with no hope of blue skies. The only advantage is that we get to sleep in every day. With no sun, there is no sunrise to shoot.

Today's objective was the Mad River Valley. The Mad River parallels Highway 100 down a beautiful valley with ridges on both side. Although the leaves were past prime color on the ridges, we still got a taste for how amazing it could be. With the dark overcast skies, the leaves seemed very subdued. I'd love to see it on a bright sunny day.

Village Bridge Our first stop was Waitsfield Covered BridgeGoogle Earth View in Waitsfield, the oldest covered bridge in Vermont. We stopped in at a Christmas shop to find our Christmas ornament for this trip. We met a very colorful woman that gave us the scoop on the history of Vermont and of the Mad River Valley. She was great. We now know that Waitsfield is the geographic center of Vermont, and that the Vermont legislature voted to impeach "Shrubby" and Chaney (Chaney said people shouldn't use four letter words, so they have to call George W. "Shrubby").

After our history and geography lesson, we continued down the Mad River Valley. We found the stretch of the Mad RiverGoogle Earth View that I had read about on the Vermont Foliage forum. Although the trees were past prime, it was still a great area. We shot for about 2.5 hours along a stretch that was about a 1/2 mile long.

We finished the day at Moss Glen Falls.Google Earth View I had seen photos of the falls and was completely unimpressed. Because of all the rain over the past week, the falls were running above average for the fall season. Although it isn't a very high waterfall, the water spreads out into thin veils. With a slow shutter speed, it turned out to be pretty impressive. The waterfall images turned out to be some of my favorite of the trip.

And then it started raining harder. That was our cue to quit early and start back for the motel.
