2009 Zion Trip

Monday, November 2

We moved to the Zion Canyon Campground, which is right outside the gate to Zion. It isn't nearly as nice as the Zion River RV Resort, but the scenery is much better here and it's right outside the park. We are camped nearly right below the Watchtower, except we're on the opposite side of the Virgin River. The campground is mostly empty, so it's very quiet.

This was our warmest day yet. We just relaxed through the middle of the day waiting for the flat light to begin the transition to the hours of golden light. We stopped and re-shot the Watchman from the bridge.Google Earth View We stopped earlier today to make sure the cottonwoods in the foreground were still lit. Since it was a weekday, we had the area pretty much to ourselves. We hiked down along the river and then back on the bike path. They have put a huge emphasis on making Zion a biking friendly park. The shuttle buses and the well-developed bike paths have really helped to cut down on the number of cars in the park.

We drove up above the tunnel and spent the remainder of the day in the slickrock. This area is absolutely amazing to me. The sandstone peaks are over a thousand feet tall and are petrified sand dunes. Each change in the wind direction that created the dunes is shown by a separate band in the sandstone. In some areas, the sandstone looks like the side of a dune was flash frozen.

We shot a giant arch at sunset.Google Earth View The golden light of sunset lit the arch while the wind lines of the fossilized dunes led our eyes up toward the arch.

I'm hoping we can spend a couple days hiking up in the slickrock later in the week. It's relatively easy hiking, and you never know what you're going to find.
