Travelogues
2013 Valley of Fire

Monday, October 28

Our plan was to drive in to the park for sunrise, but we woke up to gray skies and no sun. That meant back to bed and some extra hours of sleep.

In the afternoon, we drove back toward Zion, but had only driven about 3 minutes when we saw a complete rainbow stretching over my favorite ranch in Utah. We quickly pulled over and photographed the rainbow. We continued down the highway a few miles  before we pulled over again to photograph the cottonwoods in the mists. The overcast skies and dampness made the leaves look more saturated and provided the best color we would see all week.

We continued driving into the park, but the rain continued on and off. We stopped at the Visitor Center and shot the Watchman from the Parking Lot. Suprisingly, we found a few good cottonwoods as a foreground and got one of our better fall color shots in Zion.

When we drove back toward the campground, we found another complete rainbow over a volcanic ridge. It's not very often when your best shots of the day are of rainbows.
