The Three Ewes

We returned to the slickrock area above the tunnel when the light warmed in the late afternoon. We had no problem finding bighorn sheep today. We came around a corner and looked up on the cliff near one of our favorite turnouts. Three ewes stood along a sandstone slope just above the road. One ewe was especially friendly and climbed down the cliff face and stopped on the highway. She wanted to be the center of attention. Then, she walked over and mingled with the people photographing her. We were within a couple of feet of her. We had to move out of her way. She eventually tired of us, and in only a couple of leaps was back up on the sandstone ridge.

The three ewes got serious about feeding on some bushes, and nothing could disturb them. After about 20 minutes, they walked along the ridge above the road and then dropped down to the highway. They owned the road. People in cars would have to get out of their way.

We followed behind them as they moved to a new feeding area down the road and behind some trees. They picked a huge bush and were still feeding on it 30 minutes later when the sun set behind the ridges. We photographed the bighorn for over an hour and probably covered about a mile. They weren't tame, but they definitely had no fear of people.
