Camp Day

Today was overcast all day. Monday and Tuesday followed the pattern of being overcast in the east but clearing shortly before sunset in the west. We had nice warm light to photograph late in the afternoon each day. Today, started out with the same pattern except that the clouds got thicker during the day, and the skies stayed overcast through the evening. Our only big adventure was to walk over to the apple orchard and pick apples. We shared the orchard with a small herd of deer who were glad to dispose of any apples we discovered to be wormy. We tossed the "reject" apples over to the deer who promptly ate them.

Capitol Reef has the unique history of including orchards along the Fremont River that the early Mormon settlers planted. The Park Service recently re-confirmed its commitment to maintain the original orchards and re-plant orchards when needed. It sounds a little odd, but the orchards are as much a part of the Capitol Reef experience as the red walls of the canyon. Visitors can pick the fruit that is in season for a small fee. The orchards include apricot, pear, peach, and apple trees. We picked red delicious apples from the orchard right next to the campground. The apples were relatively small, but they were delicious (pun intended).
