Las Vegas

The weather made it easy to leave Kanab and start our journey home. The sky was completely overcast, and we saw only a few glimpses of the sun as we drove from Kanab to St. George. We crossed plateaus framed by layer-cake cliffs. There were huge grassland meadows that stretched for miles, but I'm assuming there wasn't enough water for pasture land. We saw very few cattle.

We dropped off the plateau just before we reached Hurricane, UT. And when I say "dropped off," I mean abruptly. We had several miles of 6% or 8% grades just before hitting the outskirts of town.

As we neared St. George, the skies opened up a bit, but it was filtered sun and not conducive to good photographs. It was a good day to travel with cool weather and no lost opportunities for good photographs. We reached Las Vegas about 2:00 and checked in at the Hitching Post RV Park. We stayed here a number of years ago when it was 105 degrees. The only thing I remembered from that trip was that we only had 30 amp service and could only run one air conditioner. It was unbearably hot. We hadn't noticed that the spaces were cramped and the campground a bit on the junky side.

We planned a short day today, so we could clean up the motorhome and repack the Explorer to make it easier to put everything away tomorrow when we get home. About 3:00, we discovered we were on the main flight path for Nellis Air Force Base. The fighters came screaming right over the campground. The motorhome practically vibrated with the engine noise from the jets. After 15 - 20 minutes, the jets would land or leave the area and it would be quiet for an hour or two. And then, they'd return and the cycle was repeated. Thankfully, they quit for the day about 7:30.

The campground had cable TV service, so we watched television for the first time in 7 1/2 weeks. We were looking forward to watching "NCIS," but it was a re-run. That didn't seem fair. Since Nevada is an election battleground state, we got to watch several of the campaign ads. California is comfortably Democratic, so we don't get the media blitz that the battleground states get. It was interesting to see some of the latest ads in the final week of the campaign.
