Grand Teton

Our two weeks of great weather in Yellowstone was finished, so it was time to head south to the Grand Tetons. We backtracked over the road we drove a week ago when we photographed Lewis and Moose Falls. Now, the meadows along the Lewis River were nearly all melted and Lewis Lake only had a few patches of ice left. A lot had changed with a week of warm weather.

We reached Colter Bay and our campground about noon. The Colter Bay RV campground have some of the best and most helpful check-in people we've met. We have a great campsite near the crown of the hill that's wide enough for two motorhomes. Carol's nephew, Shawn, and his family are joining us on Thursday, and they will be right across the road from us. We got our camp set up and were just settling in when the rain started. I'm afraid that was an omen for the rest of the week.

When the rain stopped, we set off to shoot along the outer road between Moran and Jackson. We stopped at Elk Flats to shoot the spring meadow with the Tetons and threatening clouds in the background. This is one of my favorite spots because we often see bison or horses from the Triangle X Ranch in this meadow.

We also stopped at the Glacier View Turnout for a view straight across to the Tetons. Looking south, we would see it raining in Moose. It was obvious the skies weren't going to clear up, so we drove back to camp for a quiet afternoon in camp.

Approaching Storm

Just before sunset, the sun broke through the clouds, so we hustled down to the "beach" just below the campground to shoot across Jackson Lake. When we arrived, there was a rainbow arcing over the access road. While we waited for sunset, a family of kids entertained us. They started playing on the beach, but slowly progressed until they were waist deep in the lake. This lake water was snow a few days ago, but they didn't seem fazed by the cold. I was cold just watching them. Sunset was a dud, although I managed to catch a starburst just as the sun set on the Tetons. A few clouds lit up after sunset, but it was nothing special.
