2022 Oregon Trip

Tuesday, July 19

Based on the way yesterday ended, we anticipated a good day of shooting today. The only question was whether we would go south to shoot around the Haceta Head Lighthouse or return north to Cape Kiwanda and hope for better lighting than yesterday. The weather had other plans for us. Today started out cloudy and only got worse as the day went on. When we checked the webcams in the area this morning, nothing looked promising.

Lincoln City is well-known for the local artists, so today was the day to return to our favorites.

Mossy Creek Pottery

Mossy Creek Pottery is just off Highway 101 a few miles south of Lincoln City. We stop here every time we're in the area to see the work of local potters who display their pottery in a charming little cottage. There were interesting pieces this year, but nothing that really "grabbed us" like previous years.

Alder House Glassworks

Just down the road from Mossy Creek Pottery was Alder House Glassworks. It was tucked in a hollow with a grove of trees around it. The workshop was weathered lumber that fit the historic glassblowing craft. The owner's house was across a small grass meadow and was also weathered lumber with a very interesting design. When we entered the workshop, one of the glassblowers was doing a demonstration of how he created a candle holder with his distinctive style. His glass work was gorgeous, and it was fascinating to watch him create the pieces. We now have new souvenirs of Oregon.

By the time we left the glassblower, the fog covered the entire area. We watched the fog blow across the highway from the bay near the road. We hoped to do something with the fog to enhance our photographs, but the fog was so thick and the light so middle gray that we gave up and returned to camp. We decided to drown our sorrows with fish n' chips from Barnacle Bills. But when we drove to the restaurant they told use they only have fish and chips on Friday through Sunday. To add insult to injury, the fog continued to get worse all afternoon and evening. I didn't shoot a single frame today. Our only photographs were Carol's shots from Alder House.
