Today, we moved to Crested Butte. Although it was only a 3-hour drive, the EvenBrake made it much more frustrating than necessary. We got an early start out of the campsite, but only got as far as the front gate before the problems started. We hooked everything up without any problems and got as far as the test before the EvenBrake started its favorite error message: Stop ASAP. We unhooked the controller in the motorhome and the power cord in the Explorer about ten times before we finally ran an internal test that caused the motorhome unit to re-initialize. Then, the EvenBrake was happy and let us go on our way.
After about ten minutes, we were the leader of a small convoy as we climbed a series of ridges. We finally reached a pullout and let them all go by. It was the bump as we left the highway that gave the EvenBrake another chance at revenge. The red light displayed, the warning beeper went off, and our favorite message displayed: "Stop ASAP. Brakes are applied." Luckily, we had enough room to pull back off the highway. Sure enough, the brake lights were on. I unplugged the EvenBrake and started the test process all over. It felt guilty over the additional frustration and started up immediately.
We made it to Montrose for our Russell Stover chocolate fix and lunch at a Chinese buffet. Then it was on Highway 50 to turn east toward Gunnison. Once again, all was going smoothly until we hit the lane bumps to let traffic pass again. You guessed it. "Stop ASAP. Brakes are applied." We barely had room to get off the highway. Having to open the door to reset the EvenBrake was a bit scary, but by now we had the routine down pat. As soon as the EvenBrake was reset, we were back in business. We made it to Gunnison and then up the minor road to Onemile campground. It was quite a surprise. The book said it was paradise for RVs, and they were certainly correct. Most of the sites were pull-through and huge. They even had electrical hook-ups. We found a pull-through that was large enough for two motorhomes and then some. It's level and even has a great view of an interesting rock formation across the river. We can hear the river running below us any time the windows or doors are open.
Almost beyond belief, we had time to just sit around and relax in our campsite. We grilled lamb chops and had a great dinner.
