After our amazing sunset last night, we amended our plans to shoot sunrise at Hopi Point or Powell Memorial and then decide whether we would shoot for one more day or head for home. If the weather was good and the clouds were cooperating, we would check out of the Maswik Lodge, photograph the remainder of the day, and drive to Williams after sunset. Then we would leave very early tomorrow, so we would still have time to pick up the motorhome when we got home. That makes for a pretty crazy turnaround to be camping at Lake Skinner on Thursday, but an extra day of great shooting might be worth it.
I got up for sunrise and drove out to Hopi Point with high hopes of a great sunrise. The high cirrus clouds were overhead, and the sky was beginning to light up as I arrived. There was wonderful color shooting east, but nothing was lighting up below me. When the sun finally hit the horizon, a dark layer of clouds just above the horizon doomed any hope of a good sunrise. The cirrus clouds overhead never lit up, and only hazy sunshine hit the formations in the canyon. As the sky lightened, it became apparent that there would be only hazy sunshine until at least early afternoon, and all the puffball clouds from yesterday were gone. There would be no reason to stay an extra day.
I was back at the Maswik Lodge by 8:00, and by 9:30 we were on our way home. We even managed to get gas for $3.06 in Kingman, AZ. That helped the budget.
We were home a few minutes after 6:00 and almost immediately started preparations for our camping trip to Lake Skinner. It was a very busy day.
