After packing the Explorer to the roof with warm clothes and cold-weather boots, we embarked on our trip to the Grand Canyon to celebrate Carol's birthday. I know we won't wear half the clothes we're bringing along, but we should be ready for any weather. It's supposed to snow 3 - 6" tonight and tomorrow at the Grand Canyon and then clear up for the weekend. The big event of the trip is Carol's birthday dinner at the El Tovar Hotel. The El Tovar is the historical hotel right at the edge of the Grand Canyon.
We left home about 9:00 this morning and arrived at the Best Western in Williams at exactly 5:00 Mountain Time. We had snow flurries for the last 40 miles as we got above 6,000 feet, but there was no build-up on the roads.
We got a great deal on our Best Western room, thanks to an email Carol received this week about Best Western specials. We were all excited to check out the Singing Pig BBQ place in Williams for dinner, but it was closed. As we planned the trip, we kept running across rave reviews for the Singing Pig from nearly everyone. It looks like we'll have to try again next time. Plan B was to return to the Pine Country Restaurant, where we could get great chicken fried steak. We've been eating there for over ten years, and tonight definitely didn't disappoint.
