Sunrise and Sunset Times
During the winter and early spring, the sunrise over the White Mountains is about 40 minutes later than TPE software predictions. Sunset and moonset times are about one later earlier than TPE predictions because of the height of the Sierras. That also means that the afterglow can be substantially after sunset.
Moonrise and Moonset
Because the moon is so high in the sky in the east before it's visible, the contrast in lighting is much greater than we usually expect. We don't see it at the horizon. We see it 4,000 feet above the horizon at our first view. The same is true at moonset. Unless the sun is at least lighting the sky and peaks, the contrast between the moon and the dark sky makes it a tough shot.
