We returned to Oh Ridge for sunrise, but it was pretty much a repeat of the lighting for sunset. There were no clouds or snow to add interest to flat light. It was another dud.
We drove back down to the edge of Gull Lake to shoot Carson Peak over the lake. The high clouds that ruined sunrise thinned out to wispy cirrus clouds, so we had a little better color in the sky. The bears on the patio of the Gull Lake Marina helped point out Carson Peak. It wasn't great for photography, but it was a beautiful morning just to hang out at the lake.
The glacier-carved basin of Convict Lake was our next stop. The flat light hid the colorful metamorphic rocks of Laurel Mountain, but open-water sections of the lake reflected the snow and surrounding rocks. It was now late morning, and we were down to shirt sleeves even at 7600 feet. It felt more like spring than February.
Our final stop was Twin Lakes above Mammoth. This is a beautiful area with Crystal Crag peering down at the chain of lakes. I used to cross country ski here in younger years on the long Presidents holiday weekend. We saw people cross country skiing today, but the snow was old and marked with lots of tracks. High clouds obscured the sky and made everything a single tone of off-white.
We tried shooting sunset at Gull Lake, but it wasn't worth the effort. I didn't shoot a single image.
We ended the day with a delicious shrimp scampi dinner and an hour of NCIS in our cabin with Don & Pat.
