Day One was a bit of a disaster. We started the trip two hours late, and it went down hill from there. We made it through L. A. with only minor delays, but when we stopped for gas at Tulare, it was 105. It felt like a blast furnace. And if that wasn't bad enough, we discovered our favorite Best Western in Tulare had no available rooms. We drove around Tulare for about an hour looking for a motel that had enough parking for our motorhome. We didn't further our disaster by getting stuck where we would have had to unhitch the Explorer, but we also didn't find a motel. We got back on Highway 99 and continued north. As we neared Selma, CA, Carol called the Best Western there, and they assured us that they had ample parking for us.
The Best Western was fairly new and the staff was nice, but instead of getting to our motel at 3:30 like we planned, it was 6:30 and we were exhausted. Instead of our traditional KFC dinner in Tulare, we settled for a crummy, fast-food Rally's. By 10:00, we were in bed hoping for a better day tomorrow.
