Alberta

Matt took Carol and me to an area of Portland called Alberta (named after the main street in the area). I liked it even better than Sellwood, which is the community that Matt and Jackie live in. Most of the shops and restaurants had some kind of community-action message on their front windows or doors. It seemed like a close-knit community that was trying very hard to be inclusive. Some signs welcomed immigrants. Others posted their credo stressing that all people were important and valued. Several stores also had murals painted on the sides of the buildings, but the Community Cycling Center had the best mural of all.

We ate brunch at Petite Provence Boulangerie & Patisserie. That's French for "really good food, good service, and an open, casual atmosphere." I definitely enjoyed our morning in Alberta.

We hung out at Matt and Jackie's through the heat of the afternoon and went out for pizza at Tastebud in the Multnomah Village district. Portland seems to be full of these smaller areas of eclectic shops and good eateries.
