2008 Rocky Mountains Trip

Thursday, September 11

Flags at half mast. Even on vacation, we are reminded of the Day of Infamy for our generation. The clock radio alarm went off and instead of the soothing music to gently rouse us into a new day, we were shocked alert with the news that a plane had hit one of the Twin Towers in New York. We turned on the television just in time to see the second plane hit the other tower. It wasn't an accident. We quickly realized, we were being attacked. It's been seven years now, but those moments are forever burned into our memories.

I had chosen Two Medicine Campground so we could take sunrise pictures on this beautiful lakeGoogle Earth View with the towering peaks on three sides. After two days of clouds, today was our day. We arrived at our planned spot, just as the tops of the peaks were lighting. It looked very promising. But after an hour and 50 or 60 images, we realized it was a bust. The wind prevented any hope of reflections, and the warm light lasted only a few minutes.

Next stop, early morning images at Wild Goose Island Overlook.Google Earth View By the time we got to the overlook, it wasn't so early anymore, and the wind was whipping up whitecaps on the lake. We discovered a new trail down toward the lake and worked that area for awhile. We shot above the highway also to get a different perspective over the trees. We shot every approach to this famous image we could think of, but unfortunately the light just didn't have any of the warmth or contrast that makes for an exceptional image. Without the sunrise light, it's very difficult to get a great shot here.

St. Mary Lake

We continued up the Going to the Sun Highway to Lunch Creek in hopes to seeing the Bighorn Sheep again, but it just wasn't our day. We turned around and headed back to Two Medicine. Our plan was to check out Glacier Lodge at East Glacier and then change campgrounds to West Glacier. We enjoyed Glacier Lodge so much that we gave up on the idea of moving and just enjoyed the afternoon. Glacier Lodge shares some of the architectural designs of the Many Glacier Hotel but the front lawns at Glacier Lodge set it apart. The lawn is so beautiful and smooth that they use the golf course mower to mow it. The lawn has to be 40 yards deep that stretches from the railroad stations where tourists used to disembark to the front doors of the lodge. The walkway between the railroad station and lodge has a flower bed that stretches the entire distance of the path. Even this late in the season, this was pretty impressive. We checked out the gift shop and even managed to find some T-shirts we hadn't seen before.

Glacier Lodge

We returned to our campsite and had a leisurely afternoon. We even had time to grill hot dogs for lunch and steaks for dinner. That certainly doesn't happen often on our photo trips. Tomorrow, we pack up and head over to West Glacier to check out the other side of the park.
