2008 Rocky Mountains Trip

Friday, September 12

Today, we moved from East Glacier to West Glacier. It was only 60 miles as we drove around the southern border of the park. We chose the North American RV Park just outside West Glacier. It turned out to be a great choice. The RV park is immaculate, well laid out, and has a nice open feeling.

McDonald Creek We got set up, grilled hamburgers, and relaxed as we waited for the lighting to improve. Our goal for today was to shoot along the river and see if we could find any locations where we could shoot the river in the foreground with the Garden Wall in the background. We found a good place where the river curved with the Garden Wall high above. The cumulus clouds added to the scene as a storm started building along the highest ridges. We continued shooting along the river for the rest of the afternoon.

We hoped to shoot moonrise at sunset to end the day. We found a place along Lake McDonald at Fish Creek. It missed as a location for moonrise, but we're definitely going back to shoot the area tomorrow morning. There is a point that juts out into the lake so we can look the length of the lake toward the high peaks around Logan Pass.

Tonight, the storm has reached us in West Glacier. It's been raining for over an hour and shows no promise of stopping. Unfortunately, it's quite warm, so there's little chance that it's snowing at the top of the high peaks. We're hoping the storm will blow through tonight so we can hike out to Avalanche Lake tomorrow afternoon.
