2008 Rocky Mountains Trip

Sunday, September 28

Today was our last full day in the park. That meant going to our favorite places.

We shot sunrise at Oxbow Bend. What it lacked in sunrise color, it made up for with peak fall color. The entire area was packed with photographers. We got there early and got a good spot right at the edge of the river.

We drove around to the north end of Jackson Lake where we had seen a group of aspens the day before. Although it was a small group of trees, they were all at their peak of color.

We returned to our campground and broke camp. The campground was closing for the season today, and we were one of the last groups to leave. The next week would be spent in a motel in Jackson as we stretched out our vacation another week. I would be spending the next week working from the motel while Carol continued to photograph in the Tetons.

We stopped at Oxbow Bend for a picnic lunch on our way to Jackson. We were hoping to shoot pelicans or osprey, but saw neither. Instead, we noticed a group of photographers at the other end of the parking lot. When we checked it out, there were five moose at the opposite curve in the river. We've always felt fortunate to see a single moose at Oxbow Bend, so we were amazed to see five moose in one spot. They were a long ways away, even with my 400 mm zoom with a doubler on it. The guys around us all had 600 F4 telephotos. Our setups looked tiny compared to theirs. When I'm ready to spend two month's salary on a lens, I can buy one of those.

After testing out the wifi connection, we found a place to park the motorhome and moved into the motel. We turned on the inverter so the solar system would run the refrigerator and walked down to Bubba's for dinner. We couldn't miss an opportunity for another chance at Bubba's barbecue.
