2009 New England Trip

Tuesday, October 6

We weren't ready to leave Bennington and the Green Mountains of southern Vermont, but our reservations said that we need to be in Plymouth, Vermont tonight.

We still hadn't checked out the 3 covered bridges in Bennington, so we started the day with them. Amazingly, they were only a few miles from our motel. Henry,Google Earth View Paper Mill,Google Earth View  and Silk RoadGoogle Earth View covered bridges were each about a mile apart on the Wallomsac River. We even had a few minutes of sunshine while we were photographing the bridges. One more thing, we didn't get lost or miss a single turn.

Kelly Stand Road I learned a very painful lesson today while shooting along Roaring Brook on the Kelly Stand Road. It was overcast most of the day, so I wasn't concerned about glare on the water. I didn't use a polarizer on any of my shots. BIG mistake.

We got some good images of the trees along the Kelly Stand Road in the Green Mountains. Since this is Robert Frost country, it reminded me of the line,

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I
I took the one less traveled by
And that has made all the difference

We enjoyed driving the minor highways that crisscross Vermont. We never knew what to expect around the next corner. One of our best surprises today was a farm we saw right along the highway. We made a quick stop and then turned around so we could get a better shot of the farm from up the road. Carol especially liked the dairy cows that provided the foreground in her picture. It was the first of several idyllic farms we would see in the next couple days. The farmers obviously take pride in the appearance of their farms. Some of the farmers even went to the extent of parking their trucks and cars out of view of the main viewpoints for photographers.

The rest of the day was spent driving to tiny Plymouth, Vermont, and the Farmbrook Motel. We stayed here 11 years ago and loved all the decorating they did for Halloween. The owners were very nice, so we thought of staying here again as soon as we decided to come back to Vermont. It's still a quaint little motel in the middle of nowhere with only the forest around. A brook goes right under the motel and feeds into a little stream in front. There's no cell service and no WiFi. We're lucky to get 3 channels here, but it still is one of our favorites.
