2009 New England Trip

Monday, October 5

Today started out overcast and gray. That meant we got to sleep in and forgot all about shooting sunrise at Grout Pond. In fact, we changed our entire itinerary for today. It wasn't going to be a good day for wide expanses.

We started by missing the turn to find The Bridge on the GreenGoogle Earth View near Arlington. There is definitely a pattern here. We were fortunate that the sun came through just as we were ready to leave, so we did get a few minutes of good light. We continued our covered bridge adventures with the Chiselville Covered Bridge.Google Earth View Believe it or not, we didn't get lost or miss a single turn. And I got a pleasant surprise as I hiked upstream from the bridge and found a beautiful little area of the Roaring Branch Brook.

On our way north, we ran across the Equinox Valley Nursery.Google Earth View They took Halloween to an all new level. The had a huge corn maze, a pumpkin patch, and an area filled with scarecrows. It was very creative and definitely drew people into the nursery in what would normally be a slow time of year. And as a side note; their plants were amazing.

The rest of the day would be spent back up in the Green Mountains. We had read about a couple good streams to shoot along that sounded promising; especially in overcast conditions like today. We started shooting along the Big Branch River on the Mt. Tabor Road just after we entered the White Rock National Recreation Area.

Our favorite place of the day was the Little Black BranchGoogle Earth View and the Big Black Branch streams that were farther up the mountain. We got pretty wet during a couple showers while we were shooting, but the moisture made the tree trunks darker and the leaf colors brighter. We had to return to the car to sit out one shower, but we were able to go back and shoot in another area after about 15 minutes. We must be dedicated photographers to brave the rain to get our shots. They turned out to be our best shots of the day, too.

We decided to make a quick run to Weston to try to find a mill and stream, but the combination of it getting dark and not knowing exactly where the mill were too much to overcome. We finally had to give up and return over the Green Mountains to our motel. Now we gave to dry out our clothes and get everything packed up to move tomorrow.
