2009 New England Trip

Sunday, October 18

We woke up to gray skies and cold rain. What a dreary day!

We had already decided to sleep in and have a leisurely morning before returning our rental car and going to the airport. Although our flight wasn't until 4:00, we didn't want to take any chances on driving into Boston for a few more hours of sightseeing. The rain sealed the deal.

We drove down the Interstate and through the tunnels to the car rental return lot without missing a single turn. We were so proud! We managed to haul our luggage on the Enterprise bus and then get it checked in at the airport. Since we were going first class, they didn't even charge us for the new extra bag. Then we just relaxed in the airport for 3 hours until our departure. We read, played on my iTouch, looked in the shops, and hit the McDonalds. It was much better than rushing around at the last minute to catch our flight.

Our flight to Dallas took the northern route, so I enjoyed the fall color of New York and Pennsylvania. As soon as we got west of Boston, the skies started clearing. I enjoyed looking at the terrain and trying to figure out where we were based on the geography. I thought I saw the ridges around Harrisburg, PA and some of the lakes of the Ozarks in Arkansas. We discovered that we had gotten out of Boston only hours before the rain turned to snow. The Patriot football game was played on a field covered with several inches of snow.

In Dallas, we landed on one side of the airport but departed on the opposite side. The people mover zipped us around the outside edge of the airport and dropped us off near our departure gate. That is one HUGE airport. We only had to wait about 90 minutes before we were on our final leg home. We had shrimp cocktail, salads, and steak on the first leg of the trip to Dallas. We had to settle for chicken parmesan on the final flight home. Flying first class could be addictive.

We had three of the softest landings I've ever had, including the steep drop into San Diego. It made a perfect ending to a trip that turned out much better than we anticipated. We had come very close to canceling it because of the nasty weather forecast for nearly the entire trip. We didn't get great weather, but we still had a good time and saw things very different than our normal vacations. Besides, we only have to wait 10 days before we leave on our motorhome trip to Zion...
