2009 New England Trip

Sunshine! Despite all the dire weather forecasts, today dawned clear and sunny. That was great news for our tour of Boston.

The tour bus picked us up at our Best Western, and we joined five other couples on the tour. It took us about fifteen minutes to be very glad we didn't try to do this on our own. It was the weekend of the Charles River Regatta, and there were three movies filming in Boston. That meant street closures and all kinds of detours. It was great to just sit back and let the guide do all the driving.

We saw Fenway Park and walked around a bit there. I know it has a lot of history, but that is one ugly ballpark. Only the new Boston Garden could match it. Do they have something against architecture and style for Boston sports facilities?

My favorite places were Boston Commons, the neighborhoods along Commonwealth Avenue, Faneuil Hall, Cambridge, the Hancock Building, and Trinity Church. The contrast between the old Trinity Church and the Hancock Building (a modern skyscraper right across the street) was amazing. My favorite photos of Boston are the reflections of Trinity Church in the windows of the Hancock Building. If we ever return to Boston, I'd love to walk some of the old neighborhoods around Beacon Hill and the Back Bay.

By noon, most of the sunshine was gone and the sky returned to gray. We still feel like we had a very good tour day, since the forecast was for rain all day. The tour guide was unbelievably knowledgeable, and we even got a few good photos.
