2011 Oregon Trip

Saturday, June 11

The Oregon Wedding Trip. That's what we're calling this trip because it all revolves around Jackie and Matt's wedding on June 18th. When I was told that my last day at work would be May 31st, we decided to take advantage of the additional time and spend six weeks touring Oregon. Most of our expenses are driving to and from Oregon in the motorhome, so why not see Oregon while we're in the area? At the last minute, my work contract was extended (at least temporarily), so the nature of the trip has changed. I'm still taking a few days off so Carol and I can celebrate our 15th anniversary at Crater Lake, but I'll be working normal hours during the week from the motorhome for the rest of the trip. You have to love technology. I'll still get to photograph the sunset golden hours after work and have the weekends for exploring.

We left La Mesa right on schedule at 8:00 and drove all of five miles before we realized we had forgotten something. We have been packing and preparing for a week, have umpteen checklists, and we still manage to forget things. Those senior moments keep sneaking up on us.

We made it through L. A. without any delays and crossed our first set of mountains at the Grapevine. Then, it was five hours of flatlands as we drove up the Central Valley. We stopped for gas, found a parking place at a truck stop, and warmed up our Chinese food leftovers for lunch. With the microwave, we seldom eat fast food while traveling anymore. We have so many better choices now.

French Camp RV & Golf Resort We had planned to stay in a motel tonight because we didn't know how far we would get. Then Carol found the French Camp RV and Golf Resort in one of our books. The campground was just what we needed. The sites are large and level, and we didn't need to unhook the Explorer overnight. The campground also gave us time to unpack all our clothes and get everything set up for the rest of the trip. When we leave home, we always pack most of our gear in the Explorer because we can do that in our driveway instead of having to haul it to the top of the hill where we park the motorhome. Staying in the campground allowed us to move our clothes and camera equipment from the Explorer to the motorhome.
