2013 Valley of Fire

Wednesday, November 6

Today, we bid adieu to Zion and returned to Valley of Fire. We wanted the opportunity to shoot some night shots by lighting some of the sandstone features in Valley of Fire and liked the idea of cutting 3 hours out of the drive home on Friday.

We got a good early start leaving Zion and made good time driving to Valley of Fire. We arrived about 12:30 and got a great campsite on the outside edge of the Atlatl Rock Campground. We didn't get our favorite site 32, but we did get site 35. We arrived just in time. Within about 30 minutes after our arrival, all the good campsites were taken. We got everything set up and then relaxed for the rest of the afternoon.

By late afternoon, clouds began to gather on the horizon, and we were optimistic about a good sunset. We drove around to the Arch Rock area for sunset, but by then the clouds had dissipated. We took a few shots of the crescent moon, but sunset was a no-show.

Enjoying the warmer weather, I decided to shoot in the campground after dinner. The Milky Way was directly above us as it stretched from the eastern horizon all the way to the setting moon. Unfortunately, it was very faint with the moon still up and the lights around the campground. I shot across the campground toward the setting moon and a star shot over the motorhome.
