2014 Washington Trip

Saturday, August 2

We woke up to overcast skies, fog, and a surfing contest on the beach right in front of our motorhome. The surfing contest was a little surreal because you could barely see them surfing through the fog. They had the sponsor tents up and the "surfing music" blaring from speakers, but it still seemed a little strange.

Our plan was to hike out to Hole-in-the-Wall at Rialto Beach, which was one of our main hikes for the trip. With the heavy fog, and no other local options, we decided to stay around the motorhome. I checked the motorhome and Explorer over and made sure they were ready for the second half of our trip. Carol did some organizing and started processing images.

We had hoped the fog would burn off during the afternoon, but it only got thicker. We finally drove to Rialto BeachGoogleEarth View anyway, so we could at least see the beach. We were there just before the high tide and walked around the massive trees that had washed ashore as "drift wood." It was hard to imagine the waves required to lift and carry some of these giant trees. Many of them were 5 or 6 feet in diameter and 60 feet long!

We turned around when we reached a point that would be cut off with the high tide and enjoyed watching the waves breaking. It seemed strange to look out at the ocean and see the waves building up higher than the level of the beach we were sitting on. The waves seemed to run downhill to the beach until they broke just a few yards off-shore.

We returned to camp, ate dinner, and processed images.

Missing Shi Shi Beach and having fog for Cape Flattery and Rialto Beach gives us a good reason to return to the Olympics soon. We still have plenty to see.
