2014 Washington Trip

Our tale of Darren de Mouse came to a tragic conclusion this morning. Carol found Darren dead in a mouse trap she had set in the pantry. We gave Darren every chance to escape and live a happy life, but he returned to his "evil" ways and paid dearly for it. It was a sad morning. I think that's enough puns for one paragraph.

We had considered driving into Portland this morning to see the Japanese Garden and the rose garden, but due to lack of motivation or strong desire to see either, we stayed in camp and washed the motorhome. The motorhome needed washing at some point to get the road grime off of it. Today was the day. We're expecting better mileage now that we have the extra weight and friction gone.

We completed the day with a trip to Costco. The day had been cloudy and overcast, but as we neared Costco and looked over the Columbia River, the setting sun dropped under the clouds for the only good sunset we had the entire trip. We had no cameras, but we enjoyed the sunset over the "houseboats" on the river. There were three marinas along the Columbia with floating homes just like in "Sleepless in Seattle." They were very cool and several were two stories high. We would have come back to photograph them, but the marinas were all gated, and the road had no parking signs all along the marinas. Evidently, others wanted to photograph them also.

The Costco was located right down by the Columbia River in an industrial park, and it was HUGE. I think 3 of our little La Mesa Costcos would have fit inside it. Portland is a huge fruit growing area, so they had lots of local produce. When we came out of Costco, the sky was still bright red and orange. We missed a great sunset. It must have been spectacular from Crown Point Vista.
