Monday, June 3

Today was an easy 6-hour drive up the Central Valley of California. When I first moved to California, the Central Valley around Bakersfield was mostly cotton with cotton gin cooperatives lining Highway 99. Today, the cotton is all gone--replaced with grape vines and orchards. Today from Tulare to Red Bluff, we saw mostly orchards in the south and rice patties north of Sacramento. It was a beautiful day to drive up the valley with the green hills to the west and the snow-covered Sierras to the east.

But as we neared Red Bluff and our campsite for the night, the temperatures climbed out of the comfortable zone into the downright HOT zone. The first thing we did when we reached our campsite at the Durango RV Resort was plug in the electrical and turn on both air conditioners in our motorhome. Since it was our first night camping on the trip, we started moving our gear out of the Explorer (Ruby), and put it away in the motorhome. By the time we finished, we were ready to sit in the air conditioning and do nothing for awhile. It's 8:00 now, and it's still 90 degrees.
