On to Silver Falls

We reluctantly packed up and left our wonderful campsite at Twin Rivers Vacation Park. We drove the 150 miles to Silver Falls State Park and settled into our new campsite. It's in a fir forest and completely shaded, but it doesn't have the park-like serenity of Twin Rivers.

The main attractions of Silver Falls State Park are South Falls, the Canyon Trail that links the 10 major waterfalls of the park, and North Falls at the opposite end of Canyon Trail. At 6:00, we ventured out to check out South Falls in the late afternoon light. We were amazed at how much the state park had improved the facilities around South Falls. They upgraded the pathways to natural-looking red pavers, new signage was added, and everything has a well-designed feel to it. It was impressive.

When we reached South Falls Overlook, I realized that the waterfall was facing a bit farther east than I remembered, and the sun was dropping behind a ridge of trees that shaded the falls. That meant no golden light on the falls, but it also meant we had nice even lighting throughout the canyon with no "hot spots." That's great for shooting slow-shutter speed waterfall images. We decided the canyon was too dark to hike all the way to the bottom for the best images, so we walked over to the main viewpoint and shot through the trees. We had the area to ourselves, which is always nice. We shot a full array of shutter speeds, so we'll know what works best when we start shooting more seriously in the coming days.

South Falls

We returned to camp and ended our day with orange chicken for dinner. It was a good day.
