Hug Point

We relaxed around camp this morning as we waited for low tide this afternoon. I wanted to photograph a waterfall at Hug Point that drops onto the beach (or the ocean at high tide). We were definitely under-whelmed by the waterfall. It was only about 10 feet tall and barely running. But it was a gorgeous day and we arrived about 30 minutes before low tide. That meant the beach was very wide with the waves adding a sheen to the beach sand. As each wave receded, we followed the wave out and set up on the wet sand. It was all about timing to get the reflections of the clouds and the beach cliffs. We even managed to stay dry the whole time.

Hug Point

When the tide started coming in and messing up our beach "canvas," we drove into Cannon Beach and checked out the shops. There were several art galleries, but my favorite was Images of the West. Randall J. Hodges' Lumachrome HD acrylic prints were amazing. The sharpness and color saturation made the prints seem to jump off the wall.

We stopped on the way back to camp at Big Wave Cafe for dinner. The Yelp reviews were good, and we've seen lots of cars there whenever we drove by. We weren't disappointed. The owner greeted us at the door and checked several times to make sure everything was right. When the calamari was over-salted, he agreed with us and promptly replaced it. The replacement calamari was done perfectly, our grilled halibut was delicious, and the crunchy French fries were great. But it was the owner that set Big Wave Cafe apart. Our only negative was that it was pretty noisy on a Friday night--and that we were too full to order the chocolate eclair pie. We may go back tomorrow afternoon for a snack.

Today was a good day.
