Happy 4th of July

I can't pretend to be feeling very patriotic this year. I'm old enough to have lived through the dark times of the race riots in the 60's, Tricky Dicky in the 70's (when I was still a Republican), 9/11, and the Chaney Administration. But I never feared for the future of our country, and I was never ashamed of our country. But we didn't separate children from their parents and put them in wire cages. Our government never sponsored child abuse with absolutely no empathy for the children or the families. The Republican Party has always been outspoken about the dangers of Russia and its dictators. Now, they embrace them as a means of staying in power. I believed we were past the worst of racism, but we've discovered that all it took was a leader that embraced it to bring racism from the dark corners of our society into general acceptance where it is flourishing again. I can only hope that the next 4th of July will be better.

Fireworks at Newport

We joined Nancy, Kelsey, and Vivian at Nancy's brother's home on a hill overlooking Newport Bay for dinner and to watch fireworks. The house was beautiful with a spectacular view across the bay to the Newport Bay Bridge. We had a feast for dinner and then settled in to wait for the fireworks. With sunset at 9:10, we had to wait until 10:00 for the fireworks to start. To say we were getting impatient would be an understatement. The wait was worth it, and we enjoyed the fireworks. Dinner with Carol's friends and the fireworks made it a good day.
