Shore Acres State Park

It finally stopped raining overnight, and by mid-morning there was a bit of sunshine. We had a quick breakfast and drove down to Drake Point where we have Internet and cell service so we could plan our day. The weather forecast and web cams discouraged us from driving back north to photograph Haceta Head Lighthouse or Sweet Creek. The weather while we were in Lincoln City prevented us from shooting several of our favorite areas. We had hoped to backtrack and get at least a couple of them from Coos Bay, but that isn't happening either.

We settled on staying on Cape Arago and walking the grounds at Shore Acres State Park. This was once the site of the Louis J. Simpson mansion and gardens. The stock market crash of the 30's wiped out Simpson. The state bought the property from him and created the state park. Simpson's mansion was razed, but the gardens and grounds were turned into a beautiful park on the cliffs overlooking some of the most rugged coast of Oregon.

The most distinctive thing about the shoreline is the strange formations that appear to grow on top of the sandstone. Some of the formations are concretions with their distinctive spheroid shapes, while others appear to be sandstone with some type of cementing agent that creates the strange shapes.

Ironically, my favorite image from Shore Acres was a "throwaway" from an experiment I tried with image stacking. The stacking didn't work at all, but I loved a calla lily at the bottom of the image. I cropped the image and re-worked it into a completely different picture.
