Charleston Harbor Fog

The sun was still missing in action when we got up, but the deep cloud layer was replaced by coastal fog. That was an improvement. Since we didn't have to be out of the campsite until 1:00, we drove down to Charleston Harbor to shoot in the fog. It's a small harbor and the fishing boats fill every slip, so it worked well in the fog. We were there for about 20 minutes before the fog started to burn off. It was still fun walking around the harbor, but we were there about an hour too late for the best shooting.

We watched a fishing boat unload at the Pacific Seafood dock. The first boat had a good night. It was filled with bucket-after-bucket of huge halibut. A small crane lifted each bucket holding 25 - 50 halibut up onto the dock where workers weighed each fish and then seemed to sort them by their weight. We heard them say that one of the halibut weighed 55 pounds. When the guys lifted the halibut off the scale, they were nearly as long as the guys were tall. I didn't realize halibut got that big. They also unloaded rock cod and something else that was covered in ice.

Just as we were ready to leave, one of the harbor seals that had been cruising the area caught a fish for breakfast. The fish was struggling to get away, but the seal re-positioned it a couple of times before finishing it off.

We took one last drive out to Cape Arago to check the viewpoints in the fog, but none of them worked. We returned to camp and finished packing everything up. We were in no hurry to leave because we only had a 24-mile drive to our next stop at Bullards Beach State Park, and checkout there was also 1:00.

Bullards State Beach

It was a beautiful drive to Bullards Beach State Park just north of Bandon. It seems we have sunny weather for our driving days, but then the clouds roll in shortly after we arrive. That's what happened today. We drove down to the Coquille River Lighthouse, but the lighting was flat and not worth any serious effort.

Bandon Beach

We drove into town and then to Bandon Beach to check out the area and decide where we wanted to shoot tomorrow morning. We stopped at Coquille Point briefly and then walked around Bandon Ocean Wayside Park. It was completely overcast, and we didn't shoot a single frame.
