Silver Falls State Park

We woke up to a very pleasant surprise--SUNSHINE! The forecast said we had an hour of sunshine before the clouds would roll in and fill the sky. We grabbed a couple of lemon muffins and hustled over to South Falls. We enjoyed two hours of sunshine shooting South Falls before the curtain closed, and the skies were filled with clouds. One minute the sky was blue and sunny, and the next minute the sky was obscured by high clouds and the sun was gone for the day.

After downloading our images and getting cleaned up, we ventured out to the Big Foot General Store, home of the Sasquatch Burger. We needed eggs and milk, and a campground host suggested this store which was a few miles outside the park. It was like a stereotypic general store in a small, rural community but with a Sasquatch theme. They were out of milk and eggs, but lunch was as good as the camp host told us. We both had variations on fish and chips, and it was delicious. The owner was manning the store by himself, so it took a while to get our food. It was definitely worth the wait.

Since the general store didn't have eggs or milk, we continued driving to Silverton and found a Safeway there. The 15-mile drive was through rolling hills covered with Christmas tree farms and fields of tall fescue grass that the farmers grow for lawn seed. Most seemed to be relatively small operations, but one was huge with a mansion on the hill overlooking the kingdom.

Downtown Silverton was a maze of one-way streets that challenged any hope of finding our destination. Without our GPS in the Explorer, we would still be looking. The big surprise was the gorgeous Victorian homes southwest of the historic downtown area. They came in all sizes, and each had its own striking paint combinations. We should have taken some time to walk around the area to photograph them.

The rest of the day was spent in the motorhome back at camp. The weather forecast looks pretty bleak for the rest of the week, so we may be spending a lot of time indoors.
