The Oregon Coast Trail

By 10:00, the clouds had dispersed, and we had a blue, cloudless sky. We drove up to the Lighthouse Viewpoint and walked the Oregon Coast Trail toward Shore Acres State Park. The trail follows the cliffs of the headlands above Sunset Bay and then the small bays on the Pacific side. It is nearly always within a foot or two of the edge of the cliff. The first part (as shown below) looks out over Sunset Bay toward Cape Lago Lighthouse in the distance.

Sunset Bay

The trail continues out to the point where you can look back at Sunset Bay and south along the Pacific toward Shore Acres and Simpson Reef. As soon as you head south, a reef parallels the shore. The reef is covered at the highest tides and exposed the rest of the time. Today, we were a couple of hours after high tide, so the reef and surrounding rocks were exposed. This provided a convenient "haul out" for a group of seals and sea lions. As the tide continued to come in, the waves grew and periodically put on quite a show as they crashed against the reef.
