2008 Rocky Mountains Trip

Saturday, September 13

Avalanche Lake. Those words have been synonymous with clouds, overcast skies, rain, or otherwise lousy weather for every other trip we've made to Glacier. Today, we broke the trend. Although it rained through much of the night, today dawned clear and bright.

Avalanche LakeGoogle Earth View is an afternoon shot, so we got to sleep in this morning. We made omelets for breakfast and had a leisurely morning. On the way to Avalanche Lake, we even managed to catch Lake McDonald in a calm moment.

Miraculously, we found a parking place fairly close to the trailhead, and we started hiking about noon. The trail was interesting at first as it followed the Avalanche Creek gorge and provided a couple spots to photograph cascades in the gorge. Unfortunately, after the first quarter mile, the rest of the trail was through mountain hemlock/cedar forest with no views at all.

The trail reaches Avalanche Lake at the outlet, where the lake is very shallow and is cluttered with logs. The initial view was pretty disappointing. We ate our lunches and then watched a black bear come out of the woods and walk along the lakeside. We walked a little farther around the edge of the lake to find a better view. The lighting improved and the lake turned to glass. It was a great afternoon of shooting.
