2009 New England Trip

Thursday, October 15

Today, we finished shooting the locations that we had planned for yesterday. The day dawned clear and cold, which was encouraging. Our first start was the Somesville Bridge. It's a tiny white bridge that crosses a small stream. The stream is dammed just below the bridge as it nears the coast, so it reflects the bridge and the surrounding trees. Although most of the trees were past peak color, it was still a nice shot.

While shooting at Somesville Bridge, we talked to an older photographer from the Denver area. He told us we should photograph Waterfall Bridge because the bridge is one of the better bridges, and the trees in the front of the bridge were in spectacular color. As we continued to talk, we discovered that he'll be in Zion the same week we will in November. We'll likely see him again in three weeks.

We decided to photograph Duck Brook Bridge before Waterfall Bridge, since it was much closer. Duck Brook BridgeGoogle Earth View is the most impressive bridge in size and design. It's also one of the easiest bridges to shoot. Even the stream above the bridge is spectacular. Most of the trees had already lost their leaves, or it would have been absolutely amazing.

Our third stop was Waterfall Bridge.Google Earth View It was about a half-mile hike up to the bridge. The trees in front of the bridge were at peak color, but they were so tall that it was difficult to figure out a way to get them in the photo. The bridge provided great framing for the waterfall on the other side. The good news was that the hike back to the car was all down hill and provided a view across a pond all the way down to the Atlantic.

We had hoped to photograph the coastal area around Bass Harbor, but the sun retired behind the clouds for the remainder of the day. We still photographed the Bass Harbor Lighthouse,Google Earth View but the light was very poor. We decided to skip the harbors we planned to photograph and have an early dinner. We drove back to the cabin and started packing to get ready for our return to Boston.
