Back to Ecola State Park
We woke up to sunshine and blue skies for the second day in-a-row. Maybe our luck is changing!
Tonight is usually the best night to shoot moonrise at sunset, and tomorrow is the day to shoot moonset at sunrise. They are my two favorite shots every month if the sky is clear. I went back through my photo apps for both days, but the sea stacks, the direction of the sun, and the high tides didn't cooperate in the places I wanted most in my photos. I looked for a couple of hours, but didn't find what I really wanted. We took a break and drove into Cannon Beach to get post cards and hit the bakery. To our complete horror, the bakery was closed on Tuesday!
We finally decided to shoot sunset at Haystack Rock with the sun over the Needles and hoped that we'd get a shot of the moonrise over the mountains. As we walked 1/2 mile up the beach toward Haystack Rock, it became clear we had made the wrong choice for today. The sky was blue and with clouds everywhere but around Haystack Rock. We turned around and walked back to the Explorer and drove to Ecola State Park where we shot last night. We wanted to shoot down toward Cannon Beach with the clouds floating over the area. It turned out to be a good call. We didn't get any great images, but we had good lighting and enjoyed talking to another photographer. We didn't see the supermoon until we crossed the ridge driving back to camp. Then it was suddenly HUGE right above a major turnout. We stopped to shoot it even though we couldn't include any foreground. It was a feel-good shot instead of a good shot.
We were back to camp by midnight and in bed by 1:00. These late sunsets are making for some strange hours for us.
